Games, Books and Film(ing)

Once again, little has been accomplished. I have yet to get the second game of Force on Force in because of scheduling issues with players(including me), in the summer that is always a problem but of course in the winter there is usually a storm to mess up a game weekend! Oh well what can you do.

I did get in a game of Warmachine using my 25 pts of Cygnar vs. a Menoth force and this was a lot more fun than I was expecting. Jumping up from a battle box to a small force added a lot of depth to the game and I didn't feel completely overwhelmed despite having not played in quite awhile. I was kept in the game by Shawn's bad dice rolls when I had left Stryker vulnerable for a few turns before I could get him back to safety but overall I felt that I had a good handle on the game and could have won but the hour was late and I attempted a do or die move and ended up dieing. But the game was fun non the less. I took some good photos but still I am not sure how to get them off my phone, some time I will actually have to see how that is done.

I have been painting up the rest of my insurgents for FoF but this is mainly for extra's we may need or if I want a game without Eric around who has all the non US forces. After they are finished, probably this week, I will move on to my USMC and the 1/1200 Napoleonic ships I have left including some for Eric.

On a slightly different note a good friend of mine  had sent me a copy of some old AD&D books that I had previously sold, no doubt to pay rent when I was much younger,  which was a nice trip down memory lane thinking of gaming all night with chips and 2L bottles of pop.

I also played a short session of WHFRP, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with my oldest son and someone I can't mention which went pretty well and was fun to do, we will probably continue the story at some point.

My F1 2010 career is going well. I recently picked up the Logitech steering wheel and peddles and though I don't know if my lap times are any better it certainly is fun. I finished season 1 of a 3 season career placing better than the team's expectations(but less than mine) but got beat out by my chosen rival. Now I am starting season 2 with a win but I always seem to do well on the first track, it may be down hill from here!

And just as a side "cool" note, they were filming a mini-series right in front of my house. I came home and Pierce Brosnan was standing on my front yard. They filmed for 2 and a bit days and it was very cool to watch the process. So when "Bag of Bones" by Stephen King comes on TV there will be one scene in which I can say "that's my house". Unfortunately I had to take down our Canadian flag for the filming as it was supposed to be Maine.

The original covers for AD&D. Pat sent me the Player's book and Deities & Demigods.

My steering wheel arrangement for F1 2010 for PS3.

My house lit up for filming with a fake full moon.

The film crew, my lawn is on the left side of the road, Pierce is in there somewhere.

Force on Force Trial Game

Well I actually got the first game of FoF in. We had four players altogether including me.  And how did it go you ask...well it took a few turns to get the flow of the game and we made numerous mistakes along the way so although we did get the feel for the game I think we are going to do a replay fairly soon now that we have a better understanding of the rules. When we do that game I will do a proper after action report. Suffice it to say on this run through the US Army dealt a crippling blow to the Insurgents in Fallujah  though they did not reach their final objective by games end. I think the replay will be a lot harder on the US Forces when we do the reactions correctly.

I found the rules reasonably ok to read and they are fairly well indexed but sometimes the rules wording seems a little unclear though all questions are quickly answered on the forums either by the game designers themselves or any number of helpful members. They have recently put up a detailed turn example which was really useful too. I think these rules will be a lot of fun and quick to play once we get the hang of them which I don't think will take too long. Eric and I both went out and bought more d8 so we'll be ready.

I also managed to pick up a copy of the next scenario book for FoF with scenarios from Afghanistan called Enduring Freedom.

As long as we like the rules we are going to start the USMC scenarios from Road to Baghdad so there will be yet more figure painting in my near future!

I haven't played any other games and I missed the Superstore games night last month but I should be able to make the next one and I should be getting a  game with Shawn this week.

So hopefully I will get in a few games before the next blog. Oh, I almost forgot I have been making up some characters for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, WHFRP, for a super secret game group.(let's just say I don't have to leave the house to play but I have been sworn to secrecy so...shhhh).

The start positions, US Army still to enter.

The US Army enters the board.

The players, plus 1. Shawn(my Malifaux opponent) kept on trying to cast spells!

The hand of doom.

The US has advanced near the objectives and most of the Insurgents are down.

Game Prioritizing

So I've come back from a week of camping with the family and for obvious reasons have not gotten a lot of gaming in but probably more than I should have.

Before I headed out I managed to get together with Shawn and played a couple of board games. We played a game of Monsterpocalypse which was fun but it took me about half the game to get the swing of it and I think it would take some time to get all the unit interactions worked out and I am not sure I liked it enough to invest the time. The same night we played a game of Dust Tactics which is a very quick game to play but suffers from a lack of depth in game play, at least with the units that come in the starter box. I suspect it will be better with a mix of more units. Fantasy Flight is coming out with a miniature set of rules for Dust called Dust Warfare written by Andy Chambers which should be worth checking out.

My son Tristan and I played a game of Space Hulk which was a lot of fun with my last Terminator being dragged to his death just before completing the mission.

While camping my son and I played Ascension which was another fun game(and easy to transport).

Eric and I had a discussion about which miniature games we would like to keep in a regular game play rotation. To meet this criteria we wanted a game we can play in about 4 hours and the rules should provide a good feel of the period but not require to much time to master the rules while the tactics we don't mind spending the time to work out.

So this is the list we came up with

Historical:
Trafalgar- 1/1200 Napoleonic Naval
Lasalle- 15mm Napoleonic
Flames of War- 15mm WWII
Disposable Heroes- 28mm WWII skirmish
Force on Force- 20mm Modern skirmish

SF/Fantasy:
Infinity- SF skirmish
Malifaux- Fantasy skirmish
Warmachine- Fantasy skirmish

Of course being a war gamer there are others that will be played but maybe not as frequently.

Next game up should be Force on Force and I will probably do up a full fledged battle report as this will be are first game of this system. Hopefully we will be playing this within a couple of weeks so that should be in the next entry.

A Quick One

This is just a quick post as I have sort of taken it a little easy after the Malifaux event to let the gaming aura dissipate from the house.

I did get in another game of Malifaux against my son at the Superstore game night which had a great turn out with 16 or so people there. The game went well, Tristan is getting a good handle on the rules and starting to get his crew figured out.

I want to try to get a historical game played at the Superstore next meeting in August.

On the modelling front I finished off the first US modern infantry squad and have started the second one, so Force on Force will be ready to go soon. I also received the Fog of War deck from Ambush Alley games this week so that will be in place for the FoF game.

And last but not least my F1 career on the PS3 has been continuing along with ups and downs. I much prefer the challenge presented by raising the difficulty level up.

My first finished squad for Force On Force, US army.

A Few Glued Men, at the Superstore. Malifaux being played here.

Hordes and Warmachine with A Few Glued Men.

Malifaux Weekend, Check.

So the Malifaux weekend has come and gone. We had 8 players all together including my son and I. Tyler and Jordan came down from New Brunswick, Shawn and Eric from Halifax, and Julian and Ian from Yarmouth. Thanks everyone for making the trip and putting up with cramped arrangements.

We had a story to set the the games in and the last battle was a 3 on 3 grand finale. Julian set the stage by writing an intro story which I will include here. Thanks Julian Smith for writing this up for us.

The boy came running into town on bloodied feet, leaving red spatters on Malifaux’s jagged cobbles.  The soles of his shoes were worn right through and his head lolled forward, as if his neck were too weak to support its weight.  His legs moved in jerks and spasms and looked on the verge of collapse.  He looked as if he were falling, but by clumsy chance his legs kept getting in the way, holding him up for long enough to postpone his fall for another step.  He ran as if he had no choice in the matter.  He ran as if he would rather die than stop.

It was midnight when the boy’s legs crumpled beneath him at last and his forehead hit the cobbles with a sickening crack.  Whether it was ill fate or sinister design we may never know, but the boy happened to collapse in Bantercraft Row, in the Spies’ Ghetto – the one place in Malifaux where the news he brought was guaranteed to be transmitted, via covert whispers, to every person of importance in the city.

The Spies’ Ghetto was on the very edge of the quarantine zone and was ringed by high walls.  It housed Malifaux’s community of freelance snoops, professional eavesdroppers, noses and ears for hire.  The spies of Malifaux were notoriously untrustworthy, would sell anyone out for a little money, would turn your slightest flaw, your most innocent mistake, into a commodity and sell it to those who wanted power over you.  Everybody felt nervous when spies were about – well, anybody with half a brain and something to hide – and so they were treated like lepers.  Nobody wanted to live near them.  So the spies lived in the Ghetto as a kind of professional courtesy.  The general population got to relax a little bit, let down their guard in their daily lives and the spies got to operate amongst a more relaxed, less guarded populace whenever they ventured out of the Ghetto on jobs.  A most satisfying arrangement for everyone involved.

Long before the running boy collapsed in Bantercraft Row, word of his coming had already reached the District via a network of runners and whisperers, so when he finally crashed to the cobbles in the dark street quite a crowd had assembled.  Witnessing remarkable events was, after all, their livelihood.

At first no one dared get too close to the boy – spies are cautious by nature.  An old whisper-merchant named Carro was the first to approach.  Carro had worked for resurrectionists and necromancers for years and he pronounced the boy dead before he even touched him.

“What’s more, he’s been dead a long time,” he said.  “Weeks, I would guess.  You can all smell it, can’t you?”

There were mutterings from the crowd and then gasps and Carro rolled the corpse over.  The boy’s body was clearly in an advanced stage of decomposition, despite the fact that he had only moments before been running through the streets.  But the most remarkable thing about him were his eyes.  They glowed blue with an unnatural luminescence.

In his clenched fist, the boy held a crumpled scrap of paper.  With effort, Carro pried the boy’s fingers apart and examined it.  It was now badly torn and spattered with blood, but it had clearly been a finely detailed map of the badlands east of Malifaux.  Over an unexplored region of badlands, a hasty sketch had been made of a ruined gateway and the words “Come and See” written in a hasty hand.  The words and the sketch glowed the same colour as the boy’s eyes.

That night, word went out from the Spies’ Ghetto and spread throughout Malifaux.  Messages were transmitted by runners and carrier pigeons and notes left in secret locations.  A thousand whispered conversations took place.  Money was exchanged.  Information was bought and sold.  At least a dozen of the spies present claimed to have possession of the original map.  Still others claimed to have the boy’s corpse.  Before the night was out every person of any importance in Malifaux had heard the news – news found its way to the crypts beneath the city where resurrectionists worked, into the barracks and offices and chambers of Guild personnel, into the hideouts and safehouses used by Arcanists and union activists, to the flophouses and taverns and encampments where Outcasts hold court, even to the unspeakable domains of the Neverborn.

All heard variations on the same story: the corpse of a boy had run into the Spies’ Ghetto clutching a map.  A boy who had been exposed to such vast concentrations of pure soulstone, that his eyes glowed blue.

The powers of Malifaux began to stir.

Each of the great factions of Malifaux gained their information through different channels.  Arcanists approached Carro and used trickery and magic to get the boy’s note from him. The Neverborn intimidated and extorted the Spies of the Ghetto, pulling the information out of them like teeth.  Outcasts listened to rumours and sent trackers and footpads to follow those who knew more than they did.  The Guild set ambushes, captured prisoners and forced the information from them.  And Resurrectionists obtained the boy’s corpse and breathed a gasp of unlife into him, and made him to speak.

Arcanist agents spread disinformation to lead the Guild astray.  Guild propagandists did the same, claiming the portal was really located out in the bayou or in the frontier town of Newport, or didn’t really exist at all.  Versions of the note were forged.  These lies were spread and repeated evolved and returned to their creators only partly-recognizable, until nobody knew what was true.  Malifaux became anarchic, with confusion and violence.  And when the factions met, blades and guns were drawn.  Much blood was spilled over the note and the corpse – and over old Carro.

Of all the crews searching for the location marked on the boy’s map, drawn by the promise of soulstones and by the mystery of the portal, only six managed to reach it.  All the others were caught in skirmishes with competing factions or led astray by trickery and disinformation.

The six masters who reached the portal reached it simultaneously, coming from different directions, following different leads.  The ruins of a circular tower rose out of the dust and rock of the badlands, and in the center of the circle, a swirling sphere of blue and electric green hovered.  It sparked and crackled and churned and seethed, and everyone who saw it felt the power that radiated from it.  All the magic users present felt energized by it, their spells stronger, their senses keener.  But everybody also felt a terrible malevolence emanating from the sphere, and trembled in fear.

For a moment, the six rival crews stood paralyzed, gaping in awe and wonder.  But only for a moment.

The battle for the portal was about to begin.

We all met at the house and then traveled to a nearby pub for a good lunch and talk before the games began, as most of us have never met before.Besides the games we had plenty of food, some good conversation, a few drinks (thanks Ian and Julian for bringing down the jugs-o-beer) and a viewing of the movie "City of Lost Children" in keeping with the weekend theme. I think everyone picked up something we weren't doing quite doing right and I really enjoyed playing against different crews and different players. I wish we had time to get enough games in so that I could have played against everyone but we kept it a relaxing, fun weekend and were not pushing getting a ton of games in.

We had plenty of crews present with the following played:
Ian-Criid
Julian-The Dreamer
Tyler-McMourning
Jordan-Ramos
Eric-Criid
Shawn-Collette
Tristan-Marcus
Rob(me)-Nicodem

We had more crews but decided to play one Master over the course of the weekend.

2 days of Malifaux, meeting some new people all in all a great weekend I'd say. The weekend was a blast and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

Thanks to my wife for letting the house get invaded for the weekend. She is now sure we need an extension built on the house!

I think it will be time to switch gears a bit. The next game up will probably be Force on Force and then maybe Trafalgar. By the next post I plan on having the Force on Force battlefield ready as well as the American force painted up, then on to the 1/1200 Langton miniature Napoleonic ships and then...well that's too far ahead to predict.

See you next time, time to get back to a jug-o-beer!

I almost forgot, I painted up 2 more minis, all I had time for I'm afraid.

Getting Ready

It's all about getting ready now. There's just over a week till the house gets invaded by a  bunch of Malifaux players and I am trying to get things together to try out the Force on Force rules.

So till the end of the week I am trying to get some Malifaux figures painted, I know I won't get them all painted but I want to get a few more ready. After this week I plan to build up some more terrain and maybe work on a few more figures. I managed to get my Lilith crew together but I am not even going to try to get any of them painted. If any one has ideas on how to make the Malifaux Cherub more stable on the base let me know. It is attached to the base by such a small and weak bit of metal I know it won't last. My son got his Marcus crew together and is trying to at least get him painted before next weekend.

Crooked Man

Enslaved Nephilim

Nicodem's Vulture. All need basing.

I am also painting up some modern US army figures so we can give the Force on Force rules a try. I am fitting these in when I want a break from painting the Malifaux figures. A friend(and opponent) of mine has insurgents ready to go so it's up to me to get the battlefield ready and the US army. The battlefield is getting some upgrades thanks to some helpful suggestions from the Ambush Alley forum.

The first fire team.

These are the Caesar plastic 1/72 miniatures.

By their BFV.

I did get in one game of Malifaux against my usual opponent, Shawn. It was Perdita vs. Colette. The game was a blast, I really injoyed this one though I ended up losing by one VP. Colette ended the game alone and running from my crew but in so she managed to sneak out one VP over me. Perdita was gone by this time and with Colette's ability to produce soul stones I could not kill her. A good game none the less.

The next blog will be the post Malifaux weekend report so expect lots of pictures. Of course after that weekend I may be kicked out of the house and I will have to blog from the front yard!

Cottage Con

Last weekend we had the annual Cottage Con event hosted by my friend Rob T at his, wait for it, cottage with most games supplied by Shawn. It was another great time full of board games, BBQ food and a good bunch of guys.

Tristan and I arrived Friday and were the last to arrive. There was already a game in progress so we filled the time playing Summoner Wars, one of the 3 games I brought. We then played a game of Rune Wars Friday night, another game I had brought. On Saturday I played Age of Empires III, Conan,  Blockus and a Zombie game in which you have to defend your house. Sunday I played Ascension and Zombie State. There may be 1 or 2 other games that I am forgetting.

The 3 things I took away from the weekend were:
1. It's always a blast playing a bunch of games with good people, my oldest son included. Thanks again for hosting Rob, and look forward to next year.
2. Make a record of the games I play because it starts to get hazy after 3 days of gaming.
3. I may be able to save the world from a Zombie outbreak but I can't protect my own house from them.

Now it's on to preparing for the Malifaux weekend in three weeks. There is going to be 10 players so it may be a little crowded but hopefully everyone will have a good time. So I am trying to paint some figures up, at least the ones that seem to get on the table frequently and maybe work on some terrain.

I think, between friends and I we have everything needed to play some games of Force on Force so we will try to get a game in soon. It is supposed to play quickly so I am looking forward to giving it a go and see how it works. The community on the Ambush Alley forum is quite friendly and have already helped me out deciding on scale and reading through back posts

So that's about it. Board games galore, getting prepared for the Malifaux weekend and also getting stuff ready to try a game of Force on Force.

I will put up pictures as I finish work on the figures for Malifaux and Force on Force.
